The FP got me thinking about the Bloodhound SSC and its predecessors. Before the Bloodhound was even a thought concept, the Thrust SSC was the king on land, reaching a top speed of 763 MPH with its twin Rolls-Royce jet engines. However, the same people that did the Thrust SSC, Bloodhound had something before that: the Thrust2.

The Thrust2 project was to break the then world land speed record at 633.47 MPH. The project began with an initial budget of £175 (~$262). In 1983, piloted by Richard Noble, it broke the record, reaching a top speed of 650.88 MPH. However, this wasn’t quite supersonic for the team behind the Thrust2. With a new goal in mind, the Thrust2 was sold in 1991 for £90,000, clearing the way for Noble’s next project: the Thrust SSC.

Richard Noble’s new goal was to break the sound barrier on land. This time, RAF Wing Commander Andy Green was to take the helm. With the help of sponsors and the proceeds from selling the Thrust2, the team managed to get the project finished in 1996, and in 1997, got the vehicle up to a top speed of 763 MPH, surpassing the sound barrier at 761.2 MPH.

Now, what’s next to come after the sound barrier? Well, they’re now setting out to break the 1,000 MPH barrier, in the Bloodhound SSC.

To be piloted by the RAF’s Andy Green, the Bloodhound SSC will break the 1,000 MPH barrier. This project is still a work-in-progress. However, you can follow their progress on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Evryone seems to have forgotten about the Miss Budweiser Rocket Car breaking the sound barrier way back in 1983.

Yes, and there’s a reason for that.

He may or may not have exceeded the speed of sound but he didn’t meet the requirements for an official record.

I’m so pumped up for the Bloodhound! The engineer in me is like a kid at christmas.
BTW, I know they’re supposed to do their first run this year. When is it scheduled?
